Benitez set to be appointed new Chelsea manager on short-term deal

The former Liverpool boss is expected to be confirmed as Roberto Di Matteo's successor in time to take charge of Sunday's home clash against Manchester City.

Rafael Benitez is set to be appointed the next Chelsea manager in time to take charge of the club’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday, GoalsReplay understands.

The former Liverpool boss is expected to be handed a short-term contract by the European champions and confirmed as Di Matteo’s replacement within the next 48 hours.
Chelsea have turned to Benitez after Pep Guardiola indicated that he wants to continue his sabbatical from football and not return to management before next summer.

Despite reports that there has been no contact between the European champions and Benitez, it is understood that a deal is being brokered for the Spaniard to be installed at Stamford Bridge imminently.

Discussions are centring on the length of the contract and the personal terms. Sources have told Goal.com that Benitez is willing to take the job until the end of the season and he is not expected to be given a long-term deal.

Chelsea expect that the 52-year-old will be in the dugout for Sunday afternoon’s Premier League match at home to Manchester City.

Benitez was in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday afternoon speaking at a coaching seminar before preparing to return to the United Kingdom, where he lives with his family in Merseyside, overnight.

Speaking to Sport360, the Spaniard declared that he has an interest in the vacant Chelsea manager’s job and hinted that his representatives had been busy in recent days.

Benitez, who has not worked in management since being fired by Inter in December 2010, said he has been waiting for a “top side who can win things”.

When asked about taking the Stamford Bridge job on a short-term basis, Benitez said: “I have to talk with my agent and see what he has been doing the last couple of days. But I am just trying to go to a team that can win. So we will find ways to have a challenge like this.

“In football a lot of people are talking so we will see what happens in the next few days. I am looking for a club that can challenge for trophies and Chelsea is one of these clubs.”

Guardiola would reject Chelsea approach

The former Barcelona boss is against breaking away from his sabbatical in New York and does not believe Stamford Bridge is the right move with trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich.

Pep Guardiola is determined to continue his sabbatical in New York and will not accept an offer from Chelsea, in case the London club would contact him.

GoalsReplay have learned, from sources very close to the Catalan coach, that the possibilities of him traveling to London are "minimal, to say that there are any".

According to those sources, Guardiola is enjoying this time with family and feels it is too early to a return to the pitch. He is also aware that when he decides to return there will be no shortage of interesting offers from top clubs, so he’s not in any hurry to end his voluntary retirement.

In addition, the manager doesn’t think the Blues are the right place for him, based on the usual treatment that the Roman Abramovich led board has dispensed to the coaches who have gone through the Stamford Bridge bench. When he comes back, Guardiola wants to be part of a serious project, where he will have time to put his ideas in practice, and it seems to him that Chelsea is not the place to do it.

Nevertheless, in case the Russian magnate decides to call him, Pep would answer, "because he is a gentleman," said the source. However, the answer will only be a courtesy, because at this time the he doesn’t have any intention to leave New York.

With Guardiola's refusal, the bookies favorites to take Chelsea’s helm are now Rafael Benitez, Harry Redknapp and Laurent Blanc.

Chelsea sack Di Matteo after Juventus defeat

The 42-year-old Italian manager has parted ways with the Champions League winners after a 3-0 defeat in Turin which left their chances of retaining the trophy in tatters.

Chelsea have sacked Roberto Di Matteo following the 3-0 defeat to Juventus on Tuesday evening which left the club's prospects of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages hanging by a thread.

The Blues needed a positive result in Turin to maintain hopes of defending their European crown, but Antonio Conte's side ran out comfortable winners with the English side looking likely to become the competition’s first ever holders to be eliminated at the group stage.

And with their Premier League form slipping after a bright start, owner Roman Abramovich has decided to sack the manager, with the club insisting that "results have not been good enough".

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo.

"The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season."

The club face a season-defining period over the coming weeks, with a clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on November 25 followed by the must-win game against Nordsjaelland on December 5.

The statement continued: "The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts."

Despite winning the Champions League and FA Cup after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in March 2012, Di Matteo is the latest in a long list of managers who have failed to appease owner Abramovich.

After winning seven of his eight opening Premier League games this season, two points from the last four league matches and seven points from a possible 15 in the Champions League sealed the Italian's fate.

The statement continued: "The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.

"The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager."
