Benitez set to be appointed new Chelsea manager on short-term deal

The former Liverpool boss is expected to be confirmed as Roberto Di Matteo's successor in time to take charge of Sunday's home clash against Manchester City.

Rafael Benitez is set to be appointed the next Chelsea manager in time to take charge of the club’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday, GoalsReplay understands.

The former Liverpool boss is expected to be handed a short-term contract by the European champions and confirmed as Di Matteo’s replacement within the next 48 hours.
Chelsea have turned to Benitez after Pep Guardiola indicated that he wants to continue his sabbatical from football and not return to management before next summer.

Despite reports that there has been no contact between the European champions and Benitez, it is understood that a deal is being brokered for the Spaniard to be installed at Stamford Bridge imminently.

Discussions are centring on the length of the contract and the personal terms. Sources have told Goal.com that Benitez is willing to take the job until the end of the season and he is not expected to be given a long-term deal.

Chelsea expect that the 52-year-old will be in the dugout for Sunday afternoon’s Premier League match at home to Manchester City.

Benitez was in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday afternoon speaking at a coaching seminar before preparing to return to the United Kingdom, where he lives with his family in Merseyside, overnight.

Speaking to Sport360, the Spaniard declared that he has an interest in the vacant Chelsea manager’s job and hinted that his representatives had been busy in recent days.

Benitez, who has not worked in management since being fired by Inter in December 2010, said he has been waiting for a “top side who can win things”.

When asked about taking the Stamford Bridge job on a short-term basis, Benitez said: “I have to talk with my agent and see what he has been doing the last couple of days. But I am just trying to go to a team that can win. So we will find ways to have a challenge like this.

“In football a lot of people are talking so we will see what happens in the next few days. I am looking for a club that can challenge for trophies and Chelsea is one of these clubs.”

Guardiola would reject Chelsea approach

The former Barcelona boss is against breaking away from his sabbatical in New York and does not believe Stamford Bridge is the right move with trigger-happy owner Roman Abramovich.

Pep Guardiola is determined to continue his sabbatical in New York and will not accept an offer from Chelsea, in case the London club would contact him.

GoalsReplay have learned, from sources very close to the Catalan coach, that the possibilities of him traveling to London are "minimal, to say that there are any".

According to those sources, Guardiola is enjoying this time with family and feels it is too early to a return to the pitch. He is also aware that when he decides to return there will be no shortage of interesting offers from top clubs, so he’s not in any hurry to end his voluntary retirement.

In addition, the manager doesn’t think the Blues are the right place for him, based on the usual treatment that the Roman Abramovich led board has dispensed to the coaches who have gone through the Stamford Bridge bench. When he comes back, Guardiola wants to be part of a serious project, where he will have time to put his ideas in practice, and it seems to him that Chelsea is not the place to do it.

Nevertheless, in case the Russian magnate decides to call him, Pep would answer, "because he is a gentleman," said the source. However, the answer will only be a courtesy, because at this time the he doesn’t have any intention to leave New York.

With Guardiola's refusal, the bookies favorites to take Chelsea’s helm are now Rafael Benitez, Harry Redknapp and Laurent Blanc.

Chelsea sack Di Matteo after Juventus defeat

The 42-year-old Italian manager has parted ways with the Champions League winners after a 3-0 defeat in Turin which left their chances of retaining the trophy in tatters.

Chelsea have sacked Roberto Di Matteo following the 3-0 defeat to Juventus on Tuesday evening which left the club's prospects of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages hanging by a thread.

The Blues needed a positive result in Turin to maintain hopes of defending their European crown, but Antonio Conte's side ran out comfortable winners with the English side looking likely to become the competition’s first ever holders to be eliminated at the group stage.

And with their Premier League form slipping after a bright start, owner Roman Abramovich has decided to sack the manager, with the club insisting that "results have not been good enough".

A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Chelsea Football Club has parted company this morning with Manager Roberto Di Matteo.

"The team's recent performances and results have not been good enough and the owner and the Board felt that a change was necessary now to keep the club moving in the right direction as we head into a vitally important part of the season."

The club face a season-defining period over the coming weeks, with a clash against Premier League champions Manchester City on November 25 followed by the must-win game against Nordsjaelland on December 5.

The statement continued: "The club faces a difficult task ahead in qualifying for the knockout stages of the Uefa Champions League as well as maintaining a strong challenge for the top of the Premier League while competing in three other cup competitions. Our aim is to remain as competitive as possible and challenge strongly on all fronts."

Despite winning the Champions League and FA Cup after taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in March 2012, Di Matteo is the latest in a long list of managers who have failed to appease owner Abramovich.

After winning seven of his eight opening Premier League games this season, two points from the last four league matches and seven points from a possible 15 in the Champions League sealed the Italian's fate.

The statement continued: "The owner and the Board would like to thank Roberto for all he has done for the club since taking over in March. Roberto helped guide us to an historic Champions League victory and a seventh FA Cup. We will never forget the huge contribution he has made to this club's history and he will always be welcome at Stamford Bridge.

"The club will be making an announcement shortly regarding a new first team manager."

Goalkeeper

Helton (Porto)

The 34-year-old is the top scoring goalkeeper available for selection in Wednesday's fixtures, averaging nine points per match from the first four games.

Not only has he been in fine form in terms of shot stopping, but Porto have also recorded three clean sheets from their four matches. He is my selection for Wednesday's Champions League team as the Portuguese side host a side they have already beaten 2-0 this campaign.

Defenders

Benedikt Howedes (Schalke)

The Germany international will be part of the Schalke defence who face Olympiakos. Huub Stevens' side recorded a 2-1 win over the Greek side in the reverse fixture, with Howedes also contributing with a goal in that game. He does not score a huge amount of goals but hopefully he will be able to help his side to a clean sheet in this match.

Maxwell (Paris Saint-Germain)

I am including two more Brazilians in my defence for Wednesday's games and they both come from Paris-Saint Germain. Les Parisiens have only conceded two goals in four matches so far and face a Dynamo Kiev side who have only scored five and look destined for a Europa League place rather than progressing from Group A.

Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain)

Similar to the reasoning above, Silva has averaged 8.8 points in Champions League games so far and also found the net in the recent match against Marseille.

Although it is not the easiest away trip, he should be able to contribute some valuable points along with Maxwell.

Philippe Mexes (AC Milan)

The French international defender does tend to pick up bookings fairly regularly but despite AC Milan's shortcomings in Serie A, they stand a good chance of recording a clean sheet against Anderlecht, who have scored just once in four matches so far. The corresponding fixture finished 0-0, so hopefully Mexes can stay out of the referee's notebook and stop the Belgian side again.

Midfielders

Yaya Toure (Manchester City)

Toure's influence on the Manchester City team is significant and as they prepare to face a Real Madrid side in danger of failing to win the group, his performance could well be key. There is still the realistic chance of a Europa League place for Roberto Mancini's side and Toure could add to his four goals already this season.

Lucho Gonzalez (Porto)

Gonzalez has been one of the star performers in Porto's impressive Champions League campaign so far, with the 31-year-old scoring against Nacional on Saturday and averaging 7.8 points inthis competition. As a vital source of assists, as well as goals, he has the potential to add plenty of points when Vitor Pereira's side take on a Dinamo Zagreb side who clearly do not have the quality to compete at this level.

Marco Reus (Borussia Dortmund)

Marco Reus is classed as a midfielder by Totel Football which means he is a great selection for this game week, considering he is often deployed in a much more attacking role than the majority of players.

Dortmund have been superb in their four games so far and Reus was on target against Real Madrid last time out as well as the game against Manchester City. The Germany international also has five Bundesliga goals to his name this season.

Santi Cazorla (Arsenal)

The 27-year-old playmaker has made a fine start to his Arsenal career and although he does not have the best points average in this competition (4.5), his four league goals and ability to provide significant ammunition for the likes of Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski and Theo Walcott mean he is a worthy inclusion.

Strikers

Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)

With no budget restrictions on Totel Football, including Cristiano Ronaldo in this week's side was a given.

He has already notched five Champions League goals this season, making him the joint-leading scorer before the fifth round of group games kick-off.

He will be lining up for Madrid against a Manchester City defence that has looked very vulnerable against top class opposition and he could improve his already impressive average of 12.5 points per game in this competition.

Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund)

There was no doubt about Lewandowski's inclusion for this fantasy team after the Poland international fired in two goals against Greuther Furth, to make it four goals in his last two Bundesliga games. Dortmund will be desperate to secure a place in the last 16 and they will be hoping Lewandowski can prove deadly against Ajax in a crucial game for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Benzema: My best is yet to come

The Frenchman impressed on his comeback, but he has made it clear that he can do even better, while voicing his delight with Madrid's display.

Real Madrid attacker Karim Benzema has stressed that he is not at his best just yet in the wake of his fine performance in the 5-1 Liga win over Athletic Bilbao at the weekend.

The France international netted once and got two assists as he helped Los Blancos to three points in his first match after a brief spell on the sidelines due to injury.

But Benzema was quick to insist that he can still do better.

"I cannot say that this was my best match for Real Madrid, because I have been more decisive in the past," Benzema told AS.

"The most important thing is that I felt well on the pitch after 15 days on the sidelines. My best has yet to come."

The attacker then went on to voice his delight with Madrid's performance as he feels they were much like the team that won La Liga last term.

"What's important is that the great Real Madrid of last season is back again. We did some wonderful things."

Real Madrid currently sit third in the league table, trailing leaders Barcelona by eight points.

Higuain and Benzema are the best strikers in the world, says Morata

The Blancos youngster is of the opinion that his colleagues are the finest forwards the game has to offer currently, and stated that he sees the duo as role models.

Alvaro Morata has described fellow Real Madrid strikers Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema as the best attackers in the world.

The 20-year-old has broken into Los Blancos' first team this season, and followed his match-winning performance in the 2-1 victory over Levante with a fine outing in the 5-1 trashing of Atheltic Bilbao on Saturday.

Morata has stated that he tries to model his game after Benzema and Higuain, who he feels should be an example to young players.

"El Pipita and Benzema are the best strikers in the world. I watch them in games and in every training session and I learn a lot," the forward was quoted as saying by AS.

"Every time I play I will give everything and I thank the people who came and encouraged me while I was on the field and supported me on social networks in recent days," he added.

Morata has made five appearances for Real Madrid's first team this season, scoring one goal.

Van Persie is 'more of a killer' than Giroud, says Arsenal scout Karembeu

The Gunners scout and former France international believes his countryman faces a difficult task in replacing the Dutchman, but has backed him to come good in the Premier League.

Arsenal scout and former France international Christian Karembeu believes striker Olivier Giroud will struggle to fill the void left by Robin van Persie, who is a "killer" in front of goal.

The 26-year-old arrived at the Emirates Stadium two months prior to Van Persie's move to Manchester United, but Arsene Wenger later admitted he was earmarked to replace the former Gunners captain ahead of an inevitable transfer.

But Karembeu, who represented his country during a successful 1998 World Cup campaign, believes his compatriot has a long way to go to emulate the mercurial Dutchman.

"Both are tall and left footed, they have the same characteristics. Van Persie however does have more experience both in the Premier League and at international level," he told GoalsReplay

"Van Persie is more of a killer and will punish teams more."

The 41-year-old, who previously played in the Premier League during a season-long spell at Middlesbrough, did admit Giroud faces unfair pressure as he adapts to a new league.

"Well we have seen with Chamakh that when you go to a new league at a big club it is not easy, but with Van Persie leaving it meant there is a gap for Giroud to fill," he continued.

"He has already scored some goals for Arsenal but he is always going to be under pressure to score more."

But Karembeu backed the former Montpellier man to find his stride soon, after a meteoric rise through European football.

"Giroud is younger and is still learning, he only started playing in the top flight in France a few years ago and now he finds himself in the Premier League at Arsenal," he added.

"He has improved a lot over the years and last season was top goalscorer in France. Hopefully he can repeat this in England."

Karembeu was speaking to promote the FIFA Interactive World Cup, the world’s largest online gaming tournament. For more information and to take part visit:www.fifa.com/fiwc.

Shock in Portugal by the possible departure of Cristiano

Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't find the reason to stay in Real Madrid. Real Madrid's star is closer to leave than to renew his contract with the club. The Portuguese press is closer is widely reported in the news.

For more the news is revealed by AS.com who is close to Real Madrid club and its known as the media who protects the club.

According to AS.com Ronaldo feels the affection of the fans and his coach Mourinho but not the clubs affection and the only one that has protected him from the outside attack is the Portuguese coach Mourinho.

At a time when Barcelona has a facility available to take care of the image of Messi Real Madrid reacts only with its total indifference to attacks that made to his star.

The last case was that of shock by Davi Navarro that cost Ronaldo 6 sewing. After the match against Levante the club instead of asking bigger protection for Ronaldo from referees (as Barcelona has asked for Messi), Real Madrid sent a cimmunique to take care of Pepe's image in the controversy between him and Ballesteros.

Despite all, the Portuguese is frustrated with the fact that he wasn't among the best players in Spanish League football last season. Cristiano has difficulties to understand, and by right, how he didn't get any price although he scored 46 goals in La Liga, where he was the decisive player of his team in wining La Liga title, and some of the blame for this he dedicated to his club for not being negligence in connection with relevant institutions.

Cristiano gave the alarm after the match against Granada where a few minutes before the end he admited that he was a little sad, because the club knew about that, because a day before he had met Florentino Perez. And the idea to change environment was strengthened just couple of days later in Monaco UEFAs gala awards ceremony when he saw the difference between Real Madrid and Barcelona structures. Cristiano Ronaldo was accompanied by the third vice of Real, Pedro Lopez, while  Barcelona had set in motion all of their media in the service of Lionel Messi who was accompanied by the supreme head of Barcelona, Sandro Rosell.

Blaugrana's club power is so great that publicity condemns player like Cleta Vigos, Jonathan Villa after any confrontation with Messi or it makes a fight like Messi vs Villa look like anecdotes a thing that Real Madrid hasn't done to protect Ronaldo.

The club works for months now to give end to the contract renovation, and to give to the star the best contract, but even on this Ronaldo has made it know that he doesn't feel bad in the economic aspect.

For all of this reasons AS warns Real Madrid that they should pay attention to the situation if they don't want a possible return to their star in Manchster United, there where he has stated Alex Ferguson as his second dad and where the fans want him back.
Its not occasionally that in the last game in the Champions League, the fans were calling his name.

Extra Time: Masked Mancini laughs off pressure

The 47-year-old had ducked his media responsibilities after losing his cool at the end of his side's Champions League draw with Ajax, however saved some face with a joke on Friday.

The Manchester City manager's job. If it's not questions about possible transfer targets or eyebrows being raised over your European credentials, then it's probably Mario Balotelli blowing up some fireworks.

Not easy, eh?

Well, the man in the hot seat, Roberto Mancini, has taken a light-hearted and very well-spirited approach to calls that he can't cope with the pressure.

After storming onto the pitch following City's Champions League draw with Ajax, first-team coach David Platt instead turned to face questions from the media last week - sparking questions about the reason for the Italian's absence.

However, Mancini was back in the spotlight on Friday, and made quite the entrance sporting a mask picturing his assistant's face, while asking journalists: "Do you prefer David or me?"

The 47-year-old then explained: "People have been asking about my mood and if I have been upset. But I had a meeting last week and that was the only reason I didn't come to the press conference."

Following the release of Call of Duty Black Ops II, Goal.com takes a look at a selection of world football's sharpest shooters.

Football can be a cruel mistress. Conceding last-minute winners, missing the vital penalty in the shootout or even being sent off to put the pressure on the rest of your team-mates.

So, with the release of Call Of Duty Black Ops II - a time-spanning, generation-spanning narrative video game which introduces players to an insidious villain named Raul Menendez who hijacks the US military infrastructure to further his own agenda - GoalsReplay has decided to get a little bit more mean and compare and contrast a selection of the sport's most potent strikers to see just who is the best.

The forwards have been split into pairs depending on their roles, duties or similar leagues. So, without any further ado, let the games begin!

Alongwith Radamel Falcao, Edinson Cavani is currently one of the most desired strikers in the world due to his penchant to score on an almost goal-to-game basis.

Indeed, the Napoli striker boasts 14 goals in as many appearances so far this season which is in stark contrast with Manchester City's deeper-lying attacker, who boasts just four in 12 games.

The pair's international records are fairly similar with Aguero managing just shy of one goal every two games, while the Uruguay international can boast an average of over one in two.

Looking at those stats, and each player's overall game, Cavani takes the crown on this occasion.

Radamel Falcao is, arguably, the most sought after striker in the world at the moment following his goal-laden 18 months with Atletico Madrid, which has seen the talisman score 49 goals in 60 games.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been the shining light in an otherwise inconsisent season for Paris Saint-Germain, netting 10 goals in nine Ligue 1 appearances to lead the league's goalscoring charts.

Whereas the Sweden international has the most prolific scoring record on international level, Falcao is currently more reliable and, statisically, has been over the course of his entire career so the Atletico man comes out on top.

However, looking at each player's overall game, Ibrahimovic comes out on top. The lanky striker has the better strength up top to bring other players into the game, will his flair and heading ability is also superior.

In the eyes of many, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the two best players in the world. Their goalscoring feats are superior than any other player over the past few seasons, with Messi breaking Pele's record of 75 goals in a calendar year on Sunday.

Ronaldo has netted a stunning 165 goals in 161 appearances for Real Madrid since joining three-and-a-half years ago, a record only bettered by Messi with his 193 goals in 185 games over the same period.

The Argentine also has the better goal-to-game ratio on the international scene and over the course of their careers so far. It's a tight battle, but the reigning Fifa World Player of the Year edges to the win in this department.

However, looking at their overall game, Ronaldo's superior heading ability, strength outweighs possible slight weaknesses in passing and work rate. It is extremely close overall but the Argentine clings onto the crown.

Following Manchester United's convincing 2-1 win over Arsenal last month, Robin van Persie described his and Wayne Rooney's roles as "nine and a half" due to the pair continually interchanging the more advanced position during a game.

Even so, there is no denying who is reaping the most rewards in the partnership; Van Persie.

The Netherlands international has plundered 11 goals in 14 appearances so far this season, nearly four times as many as Rooney in only three extra games.

Looking further afield, Van Persie has a better goals-per-game ratio on international level and over the course of his entire career.

Both players boast similar attributes in terms of their overall game, but the Dutch hitman again trumps Rooney in that department. An easy winner all round.
