A man has
been arrested over an allegation that a racist gesture was made to a player
during last week's Capital One Cup match between Chelsea and Manchester United,
London's Metropolitan police have confirmed.
"He was
arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated Section 4a Public Order Act
offence and currently remains in custody at the west London police station.
Enquiries continue," a police statement said.
The
28-year-old was arrested after attending the station in question by
appointment.
The fan was
photographed making monkey gestures during Chelsea's 5-4 victory over United on
Wednesday. Chelsea said they were investigating the incident.
Meanwhile,
referee Mark Clattenburg has again been stood down for this weekend's fixture
programme.
The police
and Football Association are both investigating allegations that Clattenburg
used racist language towards Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel during a Premier
League game on October 28.
Clattenburg,
who maintains he is innocent, has been taken out of the spotlight as a result
of the two investigations.
He did not
referee at the weekend and has again been left off the list of officials for
the coming round of fixtures as the authorities continue their enquiries into
the matter.
Mike Riley,
general manager of Professional Game Match Officials Limited, said: "PGMOL
was fully prepared to appoint Mark to matches this weekend.
"However,
having discussed this with him, we both consider that it is in Mark's best
interests that he has this week away from officiating duties while he prepares
to help The FA and police with their enquiries.''
